learning to play the pan.
2. To learn how to improvise harmonically, melodically, and
rhythmically
3. To learn about the musical, political, and sociological origins of
the steel band movement in Trinidad.
4. To learn about the important figures who shaped and are shaping the
instrument today.
5. To learn basic composition techniques for the steel band.
GRADING:
Grades are predicated on attendance. You will be allowed two
absences, excused or unexcused for the semester. After that, you
will be reduced one half of a letter grade for each class missed.
Perfect attendance and just two missed classed will result in an A for
the course. Perfect attendance and three missed classes will
result in an A-, four missed classes a B and so on. You are required to
participate in any concerts listed on this site the first two
weeks of the semester. Any additional concerts are not
required but greatly appreciated.
MATERIALS:
Please bring a notebook, a pencil with an eraser, and a folder to store
class handouts to each class.
You will need to purchase one pair of steel drum mallets for
$15.00. This can be in the form of cash or a check made out to
HydroSteel. This purchase must be made by the second week of
classes.
You will also need to obtain cardboard on which to draw the layout of
your pan so you will have something to practice on. The pans are
each 22 ¾” in diameter, so you’ll need something at least that
large. If you end up playing bass, you will need 6 of
these. If you play cello, you will need 3. If you play
guitars or double 2nds, you will need 2, and if you play lead, you only
need 1.
