We were delighted to welcome 60 guests to this year's Delaware Horn Day, and a special thanks goes out to our Featured Guest Artist, Michelle Reed Baker, to Dave Weiner of Brass Arts Unlimited, and to pianist Holly Roadfeldt-O'Riordan.

The day began bright and early Sunday (though the weather was not so bright!) with a brief "mini-concert" by the U.D. Horn Ensemble, followed by a presentation by Dave Weiner who gave many useful tips on keeping horns in shape and how to make some emergency repairs before the horn has to go into his shop. Chris Cromer of A "minor" Tune-up in Wilmington was also on hand to offer additional advice on brass repair.

Participants then had an opportunity for a horn ensemble reading, ably led by Kathy Mehrtens of the College of New Jersey, or a College music audition/application seminar led by U.D.'s horn professor John David Smith. Dr. Smith is of course always happy to talk with prospective students about opportunities at U.D., so if you weren't able to make it for Horn Day, he'd be happy to fill you in with more!

Our own U.D. horn students supplied everyone with a light lunch to build strength for the day's main attraction, a master class with Michelle Reed Baker of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra.

Michelle had a chance to work with four U.D. students, John Keister, Brendan Czupryna, Jessica Santiago and Brendan McDonnell on solo pieces, etudes and orchestral excerpts. Those in the audience had a chance to ask Michelle quesitons on a variety of topics, including the audition process, low vs. high playing, and effective practice techniques.

Michelle was also on hand for a brief recital that followed, performing Neuling's Bagatelle and serving as a "ringer" with the U.D. Horn Ensemble in an arrangement of Mendelssohn's Nocture.

Performances by John Keister, Jessica Santiago and John David Smith rounded out the program, and Holly Roadfeldt-O'Riordan provided skillful and sensitive collaboration on piano.

The truly hearty stayed on for another horn ensemble reading, a great way to wind up what we hope was an informative and productive day for all. Make plans to join us for future Horn Days - this is the place to learn about them when they happen!
