A Message From the Chair

Dear Friends,

bus
Dr. Paul Head

I’m delighted you decided to ‘follow the link’ to the electronic edition of Dynamics! Great things are happening in the Department of Music, and we don’t want you to miss a single opportunity to be a part of the excitement.

In this issue, you will read about our dedicated faculty and students and their outstanding accomplishments in recent months. Delaware Horn Day was an outrageous success, bringing nearly 75 horn players to our campus in the fall, and our orchestral programs continue to grow while pleasing sold-out audiences. (Buy your tickets early!) And, of course, our Marching Band concluded their season with a quick trip to Chattanooga for the NCAA Division Championship.

Looking ahead, we will have our first foray into the new Thompson Theater, the state of the art facility in the Center for the Arts, with the upcoming production of Così Fan Tutte. The Chorale will travel to Hartford, Connecticut to sing on the ACDA Eastern Division Convention, the Horn Ensemble hopes to travel to Colorado where they have been invited to perform for the International Horn Society, and the Steel Band is currently refining a tour itinerary that will take them to Sweden, Germany, and Israel. Now, more than ever, UD students are truly part of the international community of musicians.

This has also been a year of hellos and goodbyes as we will soon bid farewell to Dr. Larry Peterson who will retire this spring after 28 years of faithful service to the Department of Music. In the meantime, we are searching for new professors in music theory and music history with the anticipation of introducing them to you by the time the next edition of Dynamics goes to press.

With the arrival of Patrick Harker, the new University President, it’s a great time to be part of Music at Delaware, and we are truly indebted to you, the alumni and enthusiastic music supporters from the community, who are associated with our fine programs. Watch for new initiatives in Development and Alumni Relations as we assume an active role in making President Harker’s dreams for a Pathway to Prominence come to life! Our faculty and students are well into this journey, and we’re eager to have you be a part of our continued success.

See you at the opera!
