Horn Day

Dr. John David Smith and the UD Horn Studio welcomed horn players and enthusiasts from six states at Delaware Horn Day on October 6 in the Amy E. DuPont Music Building and the Roselle Center for the Arts. Over fifty visitors as well as a number of UD students participated in the day-long event, which featured guest artist Julie Landsman, Principal Horn of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and faculty member of the Juilliard School.

Festivities kicked off with a brief concert featuring our own UD Horn Ensemble, followed by seminars in horn maintenance and college audition preparation, and a large horn ensemble reading. All of the UD horn students had a chance to work with Ms. Landsman during an afternoon master class, and a unique opportunity to perform with her in a horn ensemble as part of Dr. Smith’s faculty recital. The recital also featured UD faculty members Julie Nishimura and new vocal faculty member Dr. Blake Smith.

Attendees included prospective UD students, area professional musicians (including members of the Philadelphia Orchestra), educators and horn enthusiasts from Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. Plans are underway for next year’s Delaware Horn Day, when the Horn Studio looks forward to welcoming even more visitors with a love for music and the magic of the orchestral horn.
