Students in the News

Zoraida Oyola-Rebaza, a first-year Master of Music student hailing from Lima, Peru, joined the Graduate String Quartet (with violinists Laura Scalzo and Jin Ying and violist Courtney Boyd), a funded group that has performed extensively in the region and is taking part in special guest artist master classes throughout the school year.

Kathryn Makos, a junior Music Education Major, is a member of the Blue Hen String Quartet (along with violinists Janice Nieves and Robin Alfieri and violist Sam Peters) which performs as part of ProjectMUSIC, a musical outreach program in conjunction with the Delaware Symphony Orchestra. This fall, Ms. Makos was hired to teach private cello lessons through the Wilmington Music School/Delaware Music School in Dover/Milford.

Flutist and Dean Scholar Mallory Oxberry traveled to Penn State in January to compete in the Eastern Divisional Collegiate Competition on the Music Teachers National Association. Mallory performed on the Winners Recital of the DSMTA competition at the Darlington Music School in Media, Pennsylvania in November.

Service-learning Scholar Ashley Snyder presented a session on special needs students in music education with her community partner, Boyd Holmes for the Delaware Music Educators Association.

ProjectMUSIC, coordinated by service-learning scholar Valerie Schlanger, has received positive press by the News Journal.
