Dr. Michael Arenson

After 30 years on the faculty, Michael Arenson retired this past spring. Every music major should have had Michael as he has taught freshman music theory for almost all of those years. Throughout that period, he also taught Sophomore Theory, Counterpoint, Form Analysis, Advanced Analytical Techniques, Theory Pedagogy, Jazz Harmony, Fundamentals of Music, and other courses.  Michael was also a member of the UD Faculty Jazz Ensemble.  Michael’s love of jazz has been very apparent in recent years as he has been the advisor of the Student IAJE (International Association for Jazz Education) Chapter since its inception. He also developed an Annual Jazz Festival which invites Middle School and High School Jazz Ensembles to the UD Campus each spring to be adjudicated. Last summer, Michael brought the IAJE Teacher Training Institute to UD with courses for teachers in the areas of technology, jazz education and vocal jazz. In his 30 years, Michael’s love of students has shown through his involvement, having been the advisor of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity since the chapter started in 1994 and also advising Sigma Alpha Iota in recent years. Michael will be missed greatly next year!
