Chorale Wins Grand Prix

Chorale in Tallinn, Estonia
The UD CHORALE toured Sweden and Finland this past spring, which culminated in the Estonian Invitational International Choral Competition held in Tallinn, Estonia. At the competition there were 41 choirs representing the finest in their classes from each of their respective regions in 11 countries, including several of the Baltic States, South Africa, Poland, Slovenia, Australia, and the UK. The Chorale was invited to perform as part of the Opening Ceremony.
The Chorale competed in three categories organized by the style of repertoire. The Chorale took second place (missing first place by a VERY narrow point margin) in each of their respective categories of Mixed Chorus, Renaissance/Baroque Music, and Contemporary Choral Music. But more importantly, the Chorale went forward as one of only six choirs selected to compete again in the Grand Prix round where only ONE choir would be selected as the Grand Champions of the entire event.
This required yet a fourth competitive set of music that had been prepared by every choir, but wherein only the six Grand Prix Choirs would be allowed to perform. The choirs performed in alphabetical order (including choirs from Sweden, Slovenia, Latvia, Estonia, and of course, the US.) As we were the “University of Delaware Chorale” we were the last of the six choirs to perform. The Chorale closed with Moses Hogan’s “The Battle of Jericho” and was received with deafening applause, stomping, and cheering.
On April 21, 2007 the UD Chorale, under the direction of Dr. Paul D. Head, won the Grand Prix of the 10 th International Choir Festival in Tallinn, Estonia. It was the first time since 1994 that an American Choir has won the competition and only the second time such has been accomplished by a choir from the United States since this festival began back in 1972. We are very proud of the accomplishments of the extraordinary group.
