Faculty in the News

Jim Ancona served as Music Coordinator and Arranger for The Penn State University Indoor Drumline. The ensemble performed music by Ginastera in a show called "Dreamscapes". The ensemble won the Silver Medal in the Winter Guard International World Championships last April. Jim spent his summer as Percussion Coordinator with the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps from Rosemont, Illinois. The corps toured North America defending their 2006 Drum Corps International World Championship.

Jennifer Barker was awarded a 2007 Established Fellowship from the Delaware Division of the Arts.

On April 29 a composition for choir and orchestra was premiered at Grace Church.  The piece, titled "Renewal--A Canticle of Peace" was composed by George Broske II (BA Music, 1970), with lyrics by Jan Broske.  Faculty members in the orchestra were Harvey Price and Jon Gaarder.

Suzanne Burton was promoted to Associate Professor. She also hosted the Gordon Institute of Music Learning conference this summer at UD and is the Gordon Institute of Music Learning Education Commission Chair. In addition she has joined the editorial committee for the Early Childhood Music and Movement Association's publication.

Suzanne delivered two papers at the Rethinking Music Teacher Preparation in the 21st Century Symposium at Teacher's College in January 2007. One paper, "School-university Partnerships: What Are They and Why Do They Matter?" was co-authored with Dr. Gena Greher of University Of Massachusetts-Lowell. The other paper, "Rethinking Music Teacher Preparation With Service-Learning" was co-authored with Dr. Alison Reynolds of Temple University. Suzanne has conducted professional development for the music teachers of Christina School District and Colonial School District this past year and had a guest appearance on WVUD Radio show Progressive Voices regarding Arts Education and Vision 2015. She is also a curriculum consultant for the State of Delaware to develop the statewide recommended music curriculum as well as a curriculum and assessment consultant with the Chief Council of State School Officers, State Collaborative on Assessment and Student Standards.

Internationally, Suzanne presented a research paper at the International Research In Music Education Conference in Exeter, England, "A Delicate Balance: When Research Meets Reality in School-University Partnerships" with Gena Greher of University of Massachusetts.

At the MENC Eastern Division Conference in Hartford, CT in March 2007 Suzanne did the following presentations:

Nicole Clouser has left the University Of Delaware Department of Music to pursue a Doctorate in Choral Conducting at the University of Maryland with a full assistantship.

Xiang Gao has been awarded a Stradivari violin ($3 million value), "1699 Lady Tennant."

busDavid Herman , Trustees Distinguished Professor of Music and University Organist, again led a study program to London in January 2007. The eighteen students are shown at the Oxford Town Hall, where they got to try out the famous 110-year-old pipe organ. In January, Dr. Herman performed the world premieres of two new organ works written for him: Alma Redemptor Mater by Francis Routh, was included in his recital at the Church of St. Lawrence-Next-Guildhall; and Effigies, by UD professor and composer Jennifer Barker, which was especially written for his recital at London's famed Temple Church. 12th-century effigies of some of the Knights Templar who founded this famous church adorn its floor.

In May, Dr. Herman was awarded an honorary Doctor of Music by Nashotah House, and Episcopal Seminary in Wisconsin, for his contributions to the field of organ and church music.

Harvey Price was a featured clinician at the 2007 Florida Day of Percussion held in Orlando. Mr. Price gave clinics on Timpani performance and ragtime xylophone concepts. In addition, Mr. Price performed on vibraphone with the Jack Mouse/Janice Borla quartet in the evening performance. Harvey Price also performed on drum set as part of a rhythm section backing up jazz great, Branford Marsalis. The concert took place at Irvine Auditorium on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania on Philadelphia this past June.

Marie Robinson will be honored during the 2009 National Opera Association (NOA) convention.

University of Delaware bass faculty member Craig Thomas did an eight country European tour with jazz legend Pat Martino in Spring 2007. Some of the highlights of the tour included Istanbul, Paris and the world famous jazz club Ronnie Scott's in London.   Craig also appeared with the Pat Martino quartet in venues throughout the US, including another Philadelphia performance at the TLA theater in March 2007.

Larry Stomberg played numerous events during his fall sabbatical including a tour of China.
