A Message from the Chair

Gore Recital Hall

Dear Family and Friends of the Department of Music,

I promised you a second Dynamics this year.  Due to the costs of production and mailing, the promised second edition is electronic.  The advantages are many for us including reduced costs, a potential wider distribution, and the ability to provide even more information to you about all the wonderful things going on at the UD Department of Music.  I welcome your comments and reactions to this format. What a year we are having!  The opening of the Center for the Arts has offered us so many wonderful opportunities.  We are still learning how to take advantage of all the possibilities it presents.  Our guest artists have been very impressed with intimacy and acoustic qualities of the Gore Recital Hall.  Our students and faculty are ecstatic with the new practice rooms on the second floor.  The added storage for instruments has allowed us to spread out a little in the Amy du Pont Music Building and not feel so cramped.

In our electronic newsletter, you will read about several exciting events and opportunities occurring this spring.  Our world class Chorale will be competing in an international competition in Estonia and Delaware Steel will travel to Israel.  Our new UD String Quartet will be performing at Winterthur and other wonderful venues around the state.  Our Blue Hen String Quartet is collaborating with the Delaware Symphony in an exciting educational outreach program, and we will continue the inaugural year of our Alumni Artist Series of concerts in February.

In addition, this edition of Dynamics will begin a series of introductory articles about the various areas of the Department of Music which include the Vocal Area, Instrumental Area, Keyboard Area, Music Education Area and the Composition/History/Theory Area.   The series begins with an article by Dr. Larry Peterson about the activities of the Composition/History/Theory Area.   I hope you enjoy these snapshots.

As usual our spring calendar of events is full of a variety of concerts and master classes of great interest.  We hope to see you on campus often.

James Prodan
