On February 28, 2007 the University of Delaware Steel Band, Delaware Steel, under the direction Assistant Professor Harvey Price, will travel to Israel for a seven-day tour at the invitation of the Municipality of Holon, Israel. Delaware Steel is the premier steel drum ensemble at the University. Besides its campus concerts, the group performs several high profile engagements every year. After a successful Germany tour in 2005, the ensemble was invited last January to participate in the Kimmel Center’s (Philadelphia) 250 th Mozart celebration, performing the Overture to the Magic Flute to a sold out house.
In Israel, Delaware Steel will perform five concerts and several educational programs throughout the greater Tel Aviv metropolitan region. The highlight of the tour will be an educational/family concert with the world renowned Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Zubin Mehta. This is the first time we believe, that a steel band has performed onstage with a world-class symphony orchestra.
Delaware Steel will also be working to establish the first steel band in the Middle East. This will be a mentoring project that will lead to future exchanges between the University and various educational institutions in Israel. The members of the ensemble are:
